Perfect wine matches: a local Drôme or Ardèche wine

Picodon (PDO)
Picodon, with its melodious name, is a small goat’s milk cheese. From its humble origins as a cheese found in the poorest farms where the grass was too poor to feed cows, it has risen to rank among the most well-known French Designation of Origin cheeses. Farmers in Ardèche and Drôme fought for its survival, as did the authorities trying to avoid the economic demise of the entire ‘terroir’. Picodon cheeses are often sold on trays as French consumers choose their Picodon in the same way they would their fruit – according to ripeness. One ripening method is called the ‘Dieulefit method’, after a local town. Their aroma is of stony ground, warm hay and something elusive – some say the shepherd’s love for his craft is reflected in this cheese. Whatever the legend – and there are many – it’s best to ask some of the old timers and you won’t be disappointed.
